The Census Bureau announced today that 71% of households that received 2010 Census forms have returned them so far. That nearly equals the 2000 Census mail participation rate of 72%.
The Census Bureau said 18 states, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have met or surpassed their 2000 Census participation rates. The bureau plans to release mail participation rates daily through the end of this week. Follow-up visits by census-takers to non-responding households begin in May.
